Last night, Samsung officially launched the Galaxy S5, its flagship smartphone that features an advanced camera, fast network connectivity, dedicated fitness tools and enhanced security.

The Galaxy S5 carries a suggested retail price of P34,990 and purchase of the smartphone also comes with a P2,000 discount for the Samsung new wearable tech products the Gear Fit and Gear 2. (Note: The P2000 discount for Gear products is a limited offer only.)

The media had a chance to try the Galaxy S5 and its neat cool features, which by far impresses a lot, particularly to an owner of a previous model of the Galaxy phone like me.

Here are the top features you would love about the Galaxy S5:

1. Superior camera functionality.

Samsung has fitted the Galaxy S5 with its own proprietary ISOCELL image sensor, which is described as the next evolution in BSI (backside illuminated sensor) technology. BSI makes cameras in smartphones have increased light sensitivity and higher color fidelity even when capturing images in poor lighting conditions. But Samsung’s ISOCELL ISOCELL technology improves on BSI technology by decreasing “crosstalk” (or light leaks to neighboring photodiodes causing faint currents to form in the image) and increasing the sensor’s full capacity by approximately 30 percent. The ISOCELL technology results in higher color fidelity, which is noticeable as a slight improvement to sharpness and richness of the image.

The fifth generation Galaxy has a 16 megapixel camera and it offers superior camera functionality like enhanced menu and user interface that allow consumers to effortlessly take, edit and share photos.

The video below shows the responsiveness of Galaxy S5 when focusing on a subject with a tap.

The Galaxy S5 is equipped with fast autofocus speed of only 0.3 seconds and an advanced High Dynamic Range (HDR), a feature that reproduces natural light and color similar to how the human eye captures images. Also, the new Selective Focus feature allows users to focus on a specific area of an object while simultaneously blurring out the background and vice versa. With this capability, consumers no longer need a special lens kit to create a shallow depth of field effect.

For the Samsung Galaxy S5, the Knox security application is no longer present, replaced by another app called the “Private Mode,” which allows you to put not just files but stuff from your gallery, video, music, and voice recorder to ensure that nobody sees them, just in case your smartphone falls in the wrong hands.

The user interface of the Settings area has also been improved (more bigger and easy-to-see icons) and the contents more organized and easier to navigate. Of course, there’s now the presence of Finger Scanner as an option for unlocking the phone. But first, you have to enroll your finger scan and input the necessary passkey. You can also use finger scanning to lock secured files.

3. Fast data connectivity.

For Galaxy S5 to ensure fast data connectivity, it employs two antennas, which utilize LTE and Wi-Fi to ensure blazing fast data speeds. With its MIMO (multi-input, multi-output) technology, downloading data allows for both LTE and Wi-Fi to work simultaneously to speed up data transfers. Plus, the Galaxy S5 supports a number of LTE frequencies with LTE Category 4 standard.

Design wise, the Galaxy S5 (left) and the previous Galaxy S4 (right) looks the same, except for the little things, like the Galaxy S5 is taller and slimmer, the back cover a perforated leather-like material, and the screen has higher resolution.

4. It’s dust and water resistant. The Galaxy S5 is IP67 certified (it can survive up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes). If you notice, the micro USB port has a cover, in case you dip it in the water, to ensure water won’t come inside.

The Galaxy S5 feature the enhanced S Health 3.0 or a suite of tools tools to help people stay fit and well.  It provides a comprehensive personal fitness tracker to help users monitor and manage their wellness, along with additional tools including a pedometer, diet and exercise records, and a new built-in heart rate monitor.  Galaxy S5 users can further customize their experience with an enriched third party app ecosystem and the ability to pair with the next generation Gear products for real-time fitness coaching.
